A big part of open response questions is being able to interpret what the question is really asking for.  There are a number of key phrases that are reused on MCAS exams and other standardized tests.  Once you umderstand what they are asking for, the rest is right there

Cellular respiration utilizes oxygen and releases carbon dioxide

Photosynthesis is the means by which plants produce the sugars they will use in respiration.  They convert carbon dioxide to sugar and release oxygen

Many microorganisms utilize fermentation as a means of gas exchange.  They respire without the use of oxygen, taking in either other gases, or in the case of yeast, utilizing sugar for energy and releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere

Summarizing Introducing Singing for Sex

To review:

We have our early ancestor Homo ergaster who is now standing on 2 legs

As a result of this bipedal stance, Homo ergaster’s head changed – altering the position of the voice box (larynx) allowing for more diverse sounds and better breath control

Standing  and walking on 2 legs required greater rhythmic coordination – evidence of our “Hard wiring” for rhythm has been demonstrated with autistic children and Parkinson’s pateints.

His brain got larger – especially development in the frontal lobe – broca’s area developed

Standing altered our pelvis – narrowing the pelvis and the birth canal in females.  This combined with our larger head, required babies to be born at an earlier stage of fetal development.  Babies needed more care than earlier Australopithecines and quadrupedal ancestors.  Females needed more support during pregnancy and the early development of babies

Sexual dimorphism decreased as women’s size got larger.  Displays of dominance due to size and aggression, previously sought after, became less advantageous – females may have begun selecting for indicators of greater proble-solving and higher brain function – as might be demonstrated by “sexy” hand axes, or complex manipulations of verbal or gestural elements – leading to musicality

Now we will see how these all come together in mothering a baby who is not able to cling to mothers’ fur, and the advantage of verbal communication to survival
